Buoy Cleaning

Buoy cleaning:
  • Clean top splice of downline and bottom splice of buoy.
  • Clean buoy with pressure washer.
  • Clean top splice of buoy and pick-up line with pressure washer. (stretch pick-up line out on mat !)
  • Clean remaining growth off the buoy with scraper and green scouring pads.
  • Replace letters/numbers if necessary. (wipe buoy with acetone and preheat surface with heat gun before attaching the new letters!)

 

Check for:
  • Wear on through line, top splice and pick-up line
  • Weight in place
  • Float on down line at correct depth
  • Wax on buoy worn off
  • Damage to reflective tape
  • Other damages to pick-up line, buoy or down line
  • Check maintenance log if inspection dive is due

 

Replace if:
  • Any sign of excessive wear
  • No sign of wax
  • Any visible damage to down line

 

Recycle for reuse:
  • Weights
  • Floats
  • Shackles (replace shackle pin if it shows excessive wear)

 

Refurbish buoys for reuse:
  • Thoroughly clean buoy with pressure washer
  • Check / replace PVC pipe and bushings
  • Seal holes or cuts with 5200, Marine Tex or similar sealant
  • Replace through line if it shows any wear
  • Remove damaged reflective tape
  • Retape after cleaning the buoy with acetone and heating the surface with an electric heat gun
  • Apply coat of wax to 8" below the top bushing
