Before joining the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary buoy team, Jardin Macdonald worked for more than two years as a Florida International University senior marine operations specialist, providing operational support for the undersea Aquarius Habitat off Islamorada. In this role, he acted as a qualified working diver and vessel captain where he supported a variety of operations including underwater rigging, mooring buoy repair and replacement, and maintenance and repairs of a variety of equipment, including compressors, generators, and diesel engines. Macdonald also worked for 11 years as the staff training coordinator with a local Key Largo dive shop, where he oversaw vessel safety and rescue procedures, trained dive instructors, and supported the overall operations and maintenance of vessels, dive equipment, and staff training initiatives. Macdonald holds an OUPV (6-Pack) USCG Merchant Mariner Credential, and is a PADI Master Instructor and Emergency First Responder Instructor, and has over 1,000 dives in the Florida Keys, in addition to extensive dive theory, safety, underwater marine operations, and local navigation experience.
