As sanctuary's lead for external communications, Gena keeps her finger on the pulse of sanctuary events and science. If you’re a reporter wanting to know more about sanctuary projects, or a member of the public with a question on sanctuary issues, feel free to contact her.

With a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Texas, Gena has worked in television, radio, newspapers and magazines in Texas, Oklahoma and Florida. She also has extensive public relations and marketing experience with a specialty in crisis communications. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Advanced International Affairs from the George H. W. Bush School at Texas A&M University where she concentrated on crisis management and national security.

Gena and her family moved to the Florida Keys in 2010 to enjoy the warm weather, gorgeous water and unique character of the island chain. She serves her community by volunteering with Key West Sunrise Rotary. She joined the sanctuary in 2017 to help spread the message about the importance of protecting our natural resources.
