+U.S. Power Squadron America's Boating Course®
January 4 and 5, starting at 8:30 a.m.
Key West Sail and Power Squadron Building

Key West, FL 33040Key West Sail and Power Squadron will be offering the America’s Boating Course to promote public awareness of the dangers on the water and to teach safe and proper boat handling skills including boat handling and elementary seamanship, boat registration, equipment, regulations and safe operation, aids to navigation, charting, and weather, navigation rules, marine radios, and trailer boating, and Florida boating rules and regulations. A $55 fee is charged to cover course expenses. Instruction is given by certified volunteers from the Key West Sail & Power Squadron. It runs for six two hour sessions with a proctored exam during the last session. After passing the exam, students have completed State of Florida requirements as well as requirements of most other states. The course is open to everyone, from teenagers upwards.

Key West, FL 33040This FREE special art exhibition by the Tropical Botanic Artists features 28 original portraits of plants discovered in the south Florida tropical wetlands now known as the Florida everglades by botanists in the 19th and 20th centuries. Early botanists braved the biting insects, large reptiles, and poisonous plants that made this unique ecosystem one of the country’s last frontiers of botanical exploration to document these species and discover how plants were used by wetland's native peoples.

The workshop will provide training for volunteers who would like to be involved with the sea turtle stranding and salvage program for the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. Training includes species identification and proper data recording procedures. Once trained, volunteers may be called on to respond to stranded or injured sea turtles. The class is open to anyone over the age of 18 years interested in volunteering.

Bell. Launched from England in 1893, the Hannah M. Bell was nearly lost twice in the vicinity of southern Florida before finally running aground on Elbow Reef off of Key Largo in 1911.

The film, directed by Luc Besson, documents his love for the sea and explores the various creatures that live in it. Cinematographer Christian Petron and Besson traveled the world to capture the grace and beauty of such amazing creatures as Floridian manatees, Bahamian dolphins, Australian great white sharks, sea snakes in the Seychelles, and many others. There is no voice over narration, rather an Eric Serra score featuring many different genres.

They are trained to respond in a defensive fashion without actually trying to stop the release. Their function is to contain the release from a safe distance, keep it from spreading, and prevent exposures.
Classes begin at 9:00 AM and end around 4:00 PM for first time attendees. For those needing their annual recertification, you will complete the course at the lunch break around 12:30 PM. Certificates will be given at the end of each respective training session. Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits will be given. The class is being offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Satellite EARTH Teacher Workshop

Key West, FL 33040EARTH (Education and Research: Testing Hypotheses) offers presentations from "real scientists" to teachers. The focus of the presentations revolve around utilizing near real time data. EARTH uses near-real-time data from ocean observatories to design and test outreach with the Internet as an interface to scientists, teachers, students, and the public. EARTH and this workshop are hosted by Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, MBARI.
Scientists from FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute will present Florida Keys’ research and teachers will collaborate to write lesson plans using this information. Teachers will receive lunch, 6.5 hrs of CEU’s and a stipend upon completion of the lesson. All teachers are welcome to attend regardless of what subject you teach. Mile Marker 36.8Bahia Honda State Park is hosting a kayak and canoe-based cleanup of the north side shoreline that is only accessible by these means. Bring your kayak or canoe, or rent one from the Coral Reef Park Company at the park. The park will provide a boat to haul debris from the cleanup site. A personal flotation device and whistle are required. Clothes and shoes that can get wet and dirty are recommended, as well as sunscreen, hat, drinking water and snacks. Entrance to the park is free for preregistered participants.

A $60 fee is charged to cover course expenses. Instruction is given by certified volunteers from the Key West Sail & Power Squadron. It runs for six two hour sessions with a proctored exam during the last session. After passing the exam, students have completed State of Florida requirements as well as requirements of most other states. The course is open to everyone, from teenagers upwards.

Each piece was further enhanced by nature's 'patina,' as algae, barnacles, and other sea creatures were allowed to settle on the artwork while it was on display -- underwater -- on the very ships featured in the scenes: the U.S.S. Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, located in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and the U.S.S. Mohawk, off Sanibel Island, Florida. This is the first time artwork from the Mohawk is on display in the Florida Keys.

Big Pine Key, FLCoast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 13-03, Big Pine Key, is offering a Boating Skills and Seamanship class. Topics include nautical highway signs, rules of the road, navigation, course charting, boat handling, equipment, radio procedures and other safe boating skills. This is an approved boating safety program which qualifies students, successfully completing the course, to receive the Florida Boating Safety Education ID card. The cost of the program is $55 per person, materials included, and $80 per couple with shared materials.
