Upper Harbor Key is a mangrove island approximately 22 miles northwest of Marathon that is surrounded by flats but is accessible at high tide. The island is used by various bird species including ospreys (Pandion haliaetus), frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens), double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus), and wading birds.

A 300-foot no-access buffer zone surrounds the island.
